Ocean Touring and Boat Rentals Situation: Eagle Kite Boarding is offering rental, lessons and services within a 2-3 mile recreation area. The number of kite boarders is 20 to 50 persons with calls fordistress estimated as high as 10-15 call per day. Eagle Kite Boarding would like to offer an electronic alert system for persons requiring assistance. A second example is Kite boarding or diving in open water whereby a mother ship monitors the activity and safety of the participants. A third example is an operation that offers both fixed operations and open or blue water experience (could be diving or yacht rentals). Resorts world wide offering similar services (Kayaking, wind surfing, jet skis and day sailing) and all have a similar problem trying to ensure the safety of their guest. The problem is that many guests will overstate their experience level and some will venture out beyond supervised areas or into restricted lagoons, etc. Guests are presently unable to signal to the tourist company operations that they are in trouble or missing. Typically a search is launched by a couple of boats operating with no signal, homing device or any idea where the customer is. Implications: For the lucky these experiences end up as only a scare, lost at sea for a few hours with severe sunburn. For the less fortunate, a full night at sea, lost, hypothermia and worse case drowning. For the tourist operator or resort any near accident or drowning is bad for business. The cost could be lost revenue, increased insurance rates and/or an expensive liability suit for damages. Solution: To have Marine Rescue Technologies design a locally managed system for the resort or adventure company that includes an electronic alert system complete with direction finding capability. The Sea Marshall beacons would also provide a visible indication (at night) as well as the electronic homing capability when the transmitters are activated. Sea
